Is Australia Experiencing A ‘Volcanic Winter’?
Significant polar fronts have delivered record-low temperatures and record-high snowfalls to swathes of Australia in recent weeks. The continent is on for one of its coldest winters on record. But why…?
June was an exceptionally cold month, according to data provided by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM):
And July is continuing that frigid trend.
Serving as just three recent examples: Alice Springs busted its longest streak of sub-zero days in recorded history; secondly, on July 15, Hillston Airport, NSW logged -6C (21.2F) — its lowest temperature ever recorded; and, thirdly, just last night, snow settled across many of Hobart’s suburbs, almost reaching sea-level in Tasmania’s south, and an apparent low of -20C (-4F) was observed.
“[It is] a very cold outbreak for the state, with snow showers down to low levels –nearly sea level– with a few reports of snow flurries, so not settling, to about 20 meters above sea level in Howden,” said BoM forecaster Luke Johnston.
And there are MORE freezing nights on the way.
“All the cold air over Tasmania is just going to sit here all week,” added Johnston, pointing out that the next few mornings would be “very, very cold for most of Tasmania … with widespread minimum temperatures between -2C and -4C (28.4F and 24.8F)”.
But in these times of ‘catastrophic global hotty heat hot’ –I think that’s the official term now– why is it so consistently cold, and ACROSS a continent as large as Australia, too?
Climatologist Emeritus Professor Roger Stone from the University of Southern Queensland believes an increase of ice around the Antarctic has led to a lot of snow on the southern Alps, causing “what we call the Thredbo Index to go up”–a phenomenon he has also tied to a rare third La Niña.
However, there are many theories doing the rounds, as is only good an proper; and while the media likes to focus on a rare third La Niña –likely because this oceanic COOLING can be somewhat chiseled and rounded to fit their ‘climate change’ hole– an overlooked factor is volcanic activity, namely Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai’s record-high mesopsheric eruption in January.
Volcanic eruptions are one of the key forcings driving Earth into its next bout of global cooling. Their worldwide uptick is tied to low solar activity, coronal holes, a waning magnetosphere, and the influx of Cosmic Rays penetrating silica-rich magma.
Hunga Tonga’s eruption of Jan 15 fired particulates through the stratosphere and into the mesosphere. At 36 miles up, it was the highest volcanic eruption ever recorded.
Those particulates are now ‘trapped’ in the upper atmosphere, and are forecast to cool the planet by approx. 0.3C. It has been suggested that Australia’s exceptionally cold and snowy winter of 2022 is being driven, at least in part, by these trapped volcanic aerosols.
Of late, Antarctica has been awash in dazzling pink and plum hues — all due to the “afterglow” of the Tongan eruption:
Similarly fiery skies have also been reported across New Zealand and Australia, which scientists, unanimously, are putting down to a spike in aerosols that were hurled up into the stratosphere following the Hunga Tonga eruption.
“Usually in mid-winter, Antarctica is nearly continuously dark, except for a slight ‘nautical twilight’ at around midday, which means the horizon is faintly visible in good conditions,” said Stuart Shaw, a science technician with Antarctica New Zealand, who is stationed at Scott Base for the winter and who captured stunning images of the blazing skies.
“But this year,” continued Shaw, “we were presented with quite a show, which had most of the station personnel grabbing jackets and running outside with their cameras to look at the awesome colors.
“Believe it or not, I haven’t edited these colors either, they are pretty much as we saw them … It’s incredible.” he said.
Data from satellite lidar –a laser radar- shows there is an abundance of aerosols in the stratosphere above Antarctica, which were not there prior to the eruption, said Nava Fedaeff, a forecaster at Niwa.
“Stratospheric aerosols can circulate the globe for months [and even years] after a volcanic eruption, scattering and bending light as the sun dips or rises below the horizon, creating a glow in the sky with hues of pink, blue, purple and violets,” explained Fedaeff.
Where these so-called experts fall silent, however, is on the cooling implications of such a phenomenon.
Scientists have long known the effect of major volcanic eruptions. The Philippines’ Mount Pinatubo, for example, cooled Earth by as much as half a degree Celsius for years after it blew its top in June 1991–a cooling that is obvious in the satellite record:
And while Antarctica, and indeed Australia, are located many thousands of kilometers from Tonga –the location of January’s eruption– “we share the same skies”, points out Jordy Hendrikx, Antarctica New Zealand’s chief science adviser.
When you dump large volumes of ash and sulfuric acid into the higher reaches of the atmosphere less sunlight reaches the surface of the planet. These particulates act in much in the same way clouds do –as Earth’s sunshade– and a cooling effect is exerted.
The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption was one of the largest in modern history, certainly the highest. And with the recent reports of visible aerosols above New Zealand, Australia and Antarctica, they are clearly still up there, still exerting a cooling effect over these regions.
Of course, the Southern Hemisphere comprises of more land masses than just Antarctica, New Zealand and Australia; and to that point, it actually stands that almost wherever you look across the ‘bottom half of the world’ there is significant cooling afoot.
Argentina, for example, just suffered its coldest autumn (March-April-May) since 1976 (solar minimum of cycle 20). And the month of June has continued that trend: temperature anomalies of as low as -3C below the multidecadal norm made for Argentina’s coldest June in 20 years, according to the nation’s meteorological agency SMN.
And likewise in neighboring Uruguay, June 2022 finished with a temperature anomaly of a whopping -2.3C below the average, making for the country’s coldest June in the last 41 years.
Temperature anomalies ranged from -1C below normal in the Southeast, to -3C in the Northwest, according to Inumet.
Moreover, the temperature of the entire planet appears to of been impacted, with a stark decline noted last month:
And so it stands, while the mainstream media assigns all of its ink to a Western European heatwave –a phenomenon linked to low solar activity, namely its weakening of the jet stream (see link below)– the entire Southern Hemisphere –and the planet overall– is experiencing exceptional cooling–as are the Tropics, which recently experienced their coolest June in 22 years.
The AGW Party are cherry-pickers to the extreme. And the average, gullible alarmist is being played like a fiddle.
Do you know who came up with the term “Carbon Footprint”? It wasn’t Greenpeace, it wasn’t a bunch of whale-hugging hippies — it was British Petroleum (BP).
Back in 2005, BP sensed the monumental environmental wave that was building, and in order to combat it launched a multi-million dollar preemptive PR campaign (hundreds of millions of dollars, in fact). This was intended to shift attention away from their own expansive drilling efforts and instead onto an individual consumer’s wasteful energy usage — and it worked.
Remember, everything is the citizens fault, never the multinational conglomerates (who now own governments, by the way, and so, in turn, the world).
Alarmists: You. Are. Being. Played.
This is all a game.
The carbon offset market is now monstrous. Enormous. However, rather than reducing global carbon emissions all it is doing is further lining the pockets of the so-called ‘polluters’, as they swap their credits around like Pokemon cards under the absurd and transparent yet heavily propagandized guise of ‘saving the planet’.
It’s another game, another market to bend, abuse and profit from. And the big names are betting BIG on carbon credits, and it’s already making them a pretty penny — this market is actually forecast to outstrip oil tenfold in the near future.
Again, alarmists: You. Are. Being. Played.
Wake up, already.
It’s time to get angry.
It’s time to get fucking furious.
All of us, versus the machine — we can win if only we reject their ‘distractions’ and ‘dividing wedges’ and instead focus on our common goals of autonomy, health and family. We must reject Big Pharma; reject Big Ag; reject their Great Reset and plot for globalization whereby us peasants own nothing but are expected to look happy about it, or else.
We must win.
Because the alternative is eternal slavery.
“Because the alternative is eternal slavery” – So True!!
Well said Cap!
We now hear the Biden Admin wants to eliminate 3,330 MW of Hydroelectric in the NW. I remember hearing pre-Covid how a Canadian electric company was taking over the utilities in the Pacific NW. Now the Canadian company was channeling Carbon Credit money added to consumers bills in Canada that was illegal in the US, but legal in Canada. Who knows where that money goes to which pockets to line? Looks like another chess move to fleece the US.
Of course, with more companies shutting down in Seattle, with Oregon eliminating cattle ranching who will be left to enjoy the beautiful scenery!
150 miles of the Columbia River Gorge is a National Scenic area.
I hope the salmon are able to enjoy it.
On checking my personal records here in SW Florida, taken daily for years now with my own eyes and thermometers recorded pre-dawn I find that July 20-28
the hottest week in the year.
Sure, enough checking Accuweather for San Angelo, Texas we find 103-107s
predicted for the remainder of July with a cooling to 98-103s the first week in August. So business as usual now.
But I find the Aussie winter in my observation to be a predictor of the US winter. So changes in temp can be slow, but with the cooling now going on won’t this continue on for some months, years? Will the aerosols in the Southern hemisphere drift to the North as well? Seems to me they would cooling the rest of the planet next summer as well.
How interesting this aligns with the planetary alignment peaking in Nov 2024.
Thanks for the BP angle on the Carbon Footprint shifting responsibility. I myself still have 2.9 Billion bbls of oil in the ground to do something with.
Can I get paid to leave it there?
Some of the aerosols in the Southern Hemisphere will drift north, however after the Pinutabo eruption (in the Northern Hemisphere) the Northern Hemisphere cooled more than the South. On this basis I would assume that the North won’t see much volcanic cooling this winter, but obviously there are a lot more possible influences on climate/weather so I think it would be pretty rash to make predictions for this winter so far in advance.
Entertain a little different point of view. The Southern Hemisphere is exceptionally cold for a variety of reasons including volcanic aerosols. The temperature there was dropping significantly before the eruption. What effect does that have on a northern hemisphere heat wave? Heat is energy. Energy that can’t be created nor destroyed. If it isn’t dispersed in the Southern Hemisphere it is compressed in the norther hemisphere. The worrisome possibility is this compressed heat is more readily radiating off into the background temperature of space. Can a wavy jet stream
drawing north tropical air explain the intense heat when the air on the equator is on average 88 degrees f. Desert air from the Sahara maybe but that doesn’t work for North America. If the heat isn’t down there it is up here or radiating into space.
That last statement is perfect.
It is up to all of us who are awake to take these facts to the public around us.
By the Fall, we will be either in total WAR or many country’s including America will have unrest unlike what you saw in 2020.
Get prepared, Arm up and find the REAL Friends who will help you in the time.
I live in Alberta. I am also an artist and farmer. When pinitubo (spelling?) blew in 1091 I think it was our crops had a hard time getting enough heat units. I mentioned this to my hubby. He said he remembered. This year we are again having heat unit issues. This past week, and this coming week, we are finally getting temps to advance the crops. Our temps before this week barely hit the 20C mark. Stayed in the upper teens. So yes we think the volcano is creating cooling.
From the artist standpoint, sunrises and sunsets are beautiful right now. Most people see that. As an artist what I see, is the daytime sky is purple toned as well. Usually the sky is shades of cerulean blue, now it is shades of ultramarine blue, a more purplish toned blue. I find it cool 😊
Trigonometric analysis of the space photography has revealed that the mushroom cloud of the Hunga Tonga eruption that occurred on 15 January 2022 blasted ash and vapours, and especially any incredible amount of water, to an mesospheric altitude of no less than 87 kilometres above sea level. With in just a few days it had already spread to form a reflective layer around the entire planet, with effects observed in the ionosphere too. Thus the spectacular colours in the sky. Already a long list of meteorologist’s have stated that they are detecting a steady drop of about 0.1*C per month, which we can approximately translate into about a 1*C drop per year. Year upon year ad infinitum. On a geological scale that is a very rapid drop into the next full Ice Age with my life time. According to what I have heard from various professional geologists the Hunga Tonga eruption were bigger than the Toba super volcano that erupted 75,000 years ago, and which brought in the Great Ice Age that lasted continuously until 11,600 years ago with the Younger Drayas. From this we must extrapolate that the Hunga Tonga eruption is definitely beyond any shadow of doubt going to be the cause of full Ice Age weather on the way. Temperatures are already approaching 1*C below what they were at this time last year. This is much worse than Cap Allon is thinking. Crops are already showing signs of failing. In the northern hemisphere we are going to be hit hard this coming winter, and the winters of the future are going to get to be even worse. The Earth spends 90% to 95% of its entire geological history in full Ice Age mode. Being in Ice Age mode is normal. During such full Ice Ages sea level globally can drop by even as much as 3 or 4 kilometres lower than it is today. We can see the signs of it in the sonar data. See it for your self using Google Earth. Once the sea level is that much lower than it is today that puts the lands where we live presently well above the snow line all the year around. It will be snowing even in the summer, yet alone in the winter. Even on the equator and tropics, yet alone in the polar regions. I remember the severe winters caused by the Mount Saint Helens eruption, as well as the severe winters caused by the Pinatubo eruption. Hunga Tonga is even way bigger than the thirteenth century 1256 AD eruption of QingHai China that led to the rise of the Mongols and caused a mini Ice Age that went on for three centuries. Our entire existence is on the line. Those who live in the equator and the tropics will be okay, but even there things will eventually turn nasty too. Things are moving fast. Get ready for this coming winter. It is going to be incredible. In all of the ten thousand years of recorded human history this is a dire situation as regard to which we have no previous experience. Summer arrives at last in sunny Manchester but sadly the “heatwave” is only lasting three days, then it’s back to a normal 20C/68F on Wednesday…. Using sod’s law, I’m planning on a very cold winter for Europe and have all the food and all the gear.. If it turns out to be mild, then I lose nothing…. We will see……
I’ll go with Ian Plimer’s explanation for our recent weather.
Earth is at the end of a warm period and we are entering the next cool cycle.
Here were I live on the southern tablelands of NSW Australia, we have had colder winters since 2019 and this year is colder because it started earlier. There is more snow on the snowy mountains than I have seen in >25 years. Skiers are having a ball.
A good website to keep an eye on is http://www.globalcryospherewatch.org/state_of_cryo/snow/
This is showing that snow extent in South America a couple of days ago was the highest ever recorded, although the data only goes back to 2005. Also there are large areas of new snow in the far North East of Siberia.

I’ve been keeping an eye on this website for years and can’t remember ever seeing so much new snow at relatively low levels in the Northern Hemisphere in mid July (based on long term averages that hottest part of the year)
Excellent commentary… I’m a scientist. I worked with Prof Gerard K. ONeill back in the 70s during the Globe Cooling scare with the “End of the World” Time Magazine covers and all the rest. Several Marshall Space Flight Center scientists explained why they would be wrong, even then. They understood sun cycles. These globalists will lose… AGW idiots will “discover” Earth is sinking back into a cooling trend (400 year mini ice age) over the next several sun cycles. They’ll wish for some Global Warming when they are starving to death.
